Winter Snuggle up in front of the box!

These cold, dark nights make us want to pull on our fluffy socks, heat up the mulled wine and hibernate with friends and food on front of the TV.

Netflix subscription is the perfect way to catch your favourite films and TV programmes and can be watched on your laptop, TV, phone or tablet. With monthly subscription starting at a reasonable £5.99, it really is a bargain! Alternatively, an Amazon Student account gives you a 6-month trial of unlimited streaming of over 15,000 titles with Prime Video, as well as delivery perks and discount on textbooks. So, watching TV can help your University grades? It’s a no brainer, wouldn’t you say?!

Now, sit back and relax with our Top TV Picks.

Empire

With a healthy balance of Hip Hop, scheming and sassy characters, Empire will have you hooked from the get-go. As Lucious Lyon (played by Terrence Howard), founder of Empire Entertainment, plans the future of his empire, his three sons and ex-wife Cookie, set out to battle to become the next heir to the hip-hop throne.

With a handful of awards to its name, including the Teen Choice Award for Breakout Show and the Television Critics Association Award for ‘Program of the Year’, this is a must see for entertainment at its finest. Witty one liners, drama, back stabbing and cameos galore from musical heavyweights (Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Hudson, Estelle and Mary J. Blidge to name just a few), Empire is one to watch.

Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars starts with four friends dealing with the aftermath of their best friend’s disappearance and supposed murder. They become caught in a riddle with an anonymous foe who goes by the name of ‘A’ and threatens destruction by revealing their darkest secrets. Now into its sixth season, the “Who is A?” storyline reaches a climax. With the girls finally uncovering A’s identity in the season finale, the now-accustomed suspense, edge-of-your-seat drama does not disappoint and is ready on Netflix to binge on to get totally squared eyed!

Game of Thrones

If something a little grittier is your cup of tea, why not jump on the Game Of Thrones bandwagon. Now into its fifth series, the plot focuses on several noble families and their fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros and Essos. The drama has received widespread acclaim by critics for complex characters and stories, scope and production values, earning an impressive 12 Emmy Award wins. Beware if your squeamish as there is frequent use of violence and gore, but you can always look away!

The Big Bang Theory

The go-to, easy watching comedy show on the list. We’ve been watching it for years, yet it still doesn’t disappoint, and nine seasons later, the show is still keeping us entertained with light hearted humour and emotive storylines. It’s perfect to come home to after a long day, you don’t have to keep up with complex storylines and who can’t love the bunch of misfits!?

Gogglebox

Ever wondered what everyone else thinks of your favourite shows or characters? Gogglebox is the highly entertaining show that does just that. It puts the spot light on normal (or not so normal) people’s living rooms from up and down the country, where we watch their reactions to the TV. Sounds an odd concept, but there will always be someone on Gogglebox thinking just what you are about TV programs. Well worth the watch!

Orange Is the New Black

Netflix’s most watched series follows Piper Chapman, a regular 30-something woman convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting drug money for her ex-girlfriend. The Netflix original series focuses on Piper’s adaptation to prison life, including facing all sorts of challenge behind bars.  Staring Taylor Schilling (Piper), Lavern Cox and Uzo Aduba, ‘OITNB’ is outrageously funny, sure to have you hooked, and all three series are on Netflix! You can thank us later.

Gossip Girl

An oldie that never gets old. New York City may be a little way from Leeds, but that doesn’t mean you can’t imagine yourselves walking around Columbia University, browsing the shops on Fifth Avenue and casually meeting friends in Central Park, and who doesn’t love an instalment of Serena and Blair to help you plan tomorrow’s outfit?! The privileged teenagers of Gossip Girl never fail to entertain, and what’s more, Netflix and Amazon Prime make a Gossip Girl binge super easy at just the click of a button.

So, we hope that’s enough to keep you entertained, but don’t lose track of time – you’ve still got to make those all important lectures!
