Alternative guide to Leeds bars
Nov 08, 2023 02:45 pmWhether you have just arrived in Leeds this year as a fresher, or have already graduated and lived here for years, we have a guide to some of the less mainstream bars in the city.
There are an ever-growing number of bars in Leeds, and it can be difficult to keep up with them. It’s easy to go into town and just visit the well-known places, especially if this is your first time in the city. But look a little deeper into the city centre and there are some gems to be found.
Smokestack
Located on Lower Briggate, Smokestack is a cocktail bar straight from the heart of New Orleans, with two floors filled with Soul, Funk Blues and Jazz. As well as a huge selection of cocktails and drinks, the bar staff are well educated and can always suggest a drink if you’re stuck for choice. Open until late on the weekends, with DJ’s and live music throughout the week, Smokestack is always a lively place.
Milo
Milo is a small bar that can be found on Call Lane next to Wire. Always playing a range of music from Jazz and Soul to Funk and 60’s Rock. With DJ’s throughout the week and free entry, Milo attracts a relaxed crowd who spend the whole night on the dancefloor.
Brudenell Social Club
Doesn’t really need an introduction from me, possibly one of the oldest and most popular bars and live music venues in Leeds. The Brudenell is exactly what it says on the tin, an old gentlemen’s club, with pool tables that still take two twenty pences, a foosball table and a gig room.
Located in Hyde Park, Brudenell has played host to a wide variety of bands underground and well known. The Cribs, Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand are some of the more well-known artists that have graced the stage, while Leeds locals Forward Russia recently reformed for a one off gig at the social club.
Sela Bar
You may not have been into Sela Bar before – it’s located on New Briggate, tucked away below street level. Sela Bar is host to a range of great live music acts, including residents Mojah Reggae on a Wednesday night. As well as great music Sela Bar has a reputation for making a great pizza. Serving handmade Italian-style pizzas throughout the day and evening.
